In a Global Environmental Politics class, I devoted several weeks to the different issues concerning the nature of contemporary global food systems. As part of their study of these systems, students partnered with Parsons Family Farm, an urban organic farm in Olympia, Washington. They spent 15-20 hours during the semester helping them grow food, which we subsequently donated to community food banks. This community-based activity provided a useful window into alternative agro-ecological food systems and helped them examine the different ways local farms are addressing environmental issues and hunger in their community.

In this lesson, students learn how businesses use advertising to influence the choices consumers make. Using magazines, students see that advertisements use a combination of facts and opinions to influence tastes and preferences. Students also listen to a story about a Korean-American family that owns a food cart. They learn how the business changes as a result of competition and how business owners can influence consumers’ tastes and preferences. Working in groups, students create print advertisements for the food cart in the book to see firsthand how advertisements can influence consumers’ choices through tastes and preferences.

I am very proud to present standards-based instructional resources for Visual Arts. The model lesson is a set of full lesson materials developed to train content area teachers at the 2016 All Students, All Standards Instructional Strategies Summer Institute. The additional sample lesson resources represent the work of a team of Colorado educators to share how they develop their own unique standards based lessons that employ high impact instructional strategies. As examples, they are intended to provide support (or conversation/creation starting points) for teachers, schools, and districts as they make their own local decisions around the best instructional plans and practices for all students.

How can you collaborate with partner/s to design a garden that grows ingredients for a pizza? Your design will be specific to the conditions of the Maine community where you live, and you will have several important decisions to make about its location. Will the garden be indoors, outdoors, virtual, or a combination?
Your partner/s can be friends, family, classmates, community members, or you can choose to work alone. Using a Google Slides Template that you copy and download, you will document your pizza garden designs. Your final garden design will be shared using a slideshow, video, or photograph format, with an audience that you choose -- You Tube, your local School Board, Google Classroom and a favorite teacher, Google Sites, social media, family and friends, or create your own hashtag.
Research will help you decide what the best growing situations are for your Pizza Garden plants and your environment. You will explore various designs and then, based on your new learning, you will design a garden that represents your thinking behind the choices you made. Finally, you will use the method that works best for you and share your Pizza Garden design with others.
Again, all of this work can be done collaboratively, with partners, or by you independently.
