The most important festival in the Chinese calendar is the New Year or Spring Festival. One of the annual events used to commemorate the festival is a colorful parade complete with animated dragon and lion figures.
In the first activity the student will learn the major differences between Eastern and Western dragons and discover why Eastern dragons are associated with Chinese New Year. They will hear a story about how the dragons came to rule major rivers of China. In the second activity, they will also learn about the Chinese New Year Dragon Parade and discover why firecrackers are used to drive off evil spirits, especially one called the Nian. In the third activity the students will see images of parading dragons, including sound-enhanced video and read poems about the New Year. In the fourth lesson the students will discover that the Chinese lion has imaginary characteristics similar to the dragon. They will view images of the lion and hear about how this highly stylized beast once fought the ferocious Nian. They will learn about the lion dancers in the New Year parade and compare them to the dragon dancers. Finally they will make their own lion masks.

Made in Germany during the Weimar period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia that is sharply divided between the working class and elite. Original Score by Gottfried Huppertz. Freder the son of the wealthy and powerful city master, Joh Fredersen, falls in love with Maria, a prophetic figure to the working class. The film length was cut back after its original German premiere, with restoration efforts finding footage recovered from Argentina and New Zealand to bring it close its original. This URL links to Modules on three topics. 1) The Original Coloradans provides students with an understanding of the peoples that inhabited the Western Slope before the arrival of the Utes. Designed for grades 3-4, but can be used with older students. 2) Clues from the Landscape allows students the opportunity to study historical photographs and maps of western Colorado in order to assess the challenges of homesteading. Designed for grades 2-4, but can be used with older students. 3) Mountain Men was compiled as part of a PBL at Grand Junction High School in 2018. Some of the lessons herein were developed and tested by GJHS students with the help of 4th grade classes at Pomona Elementary. It would not have been possible without the partnership between the MWC and D-51 schools. For the purpose of this educational kit, some lessons have been adapted from other existing museum kits including the History Colorado Mountain Man Kit and the Wyoming State Museum Mountain Man Discovery Trunk. The REBELAH project was designed to help foster more inclusive learning environments in adult education. Studies have shown that members of minoritized religious and ethnic groups experience trouble in educational settings, as learners from the majoritized groups feel uncomfortable when they are in their group. The REBELAH project aimed to create tools and activities that can help trainers and learners foster more inclusive and safe learning environments. These tools and activities have a particular focus on (European) cultural heritage.
These results include two handbooks (a book with activities useful during inclusiveness and heritage workshops, and a train the trainer handbook), six videos showing how heritage items and sites can be used to foster inclusivity in workshops settings, and a Google maps infosheet with 24 Prezi presentations on specific heritage items used during the project.
The handbooks are licensed under CC BY-NC-ND, and the other materials are licensed under CC BY-NC-SA.
