This unit on American Indians: By studying the regions of the United States and the cultures that live in each region, students are able to compare/contrast within regions and across regions how tribes used their environments, and their cultural and other contributions to American life.
Note that the emphasis here is on broader groups of tribes for each region with some instruction on specific tribes representing each region. In no way is this case study approach to learning about one tribe meant to be generalized to all tribes of that region. We understand that each tribe was and continues to be unique in its culture, practices, lifeways, and traditions.

The unit is focused on the examination of geography in terms of “place.” Students dive into inquiry to answer the compelling questions, “Where are we?” and “Who are we?” Through these two questions students will understand where they live and where people around the world live. I know a LOT about Dyslexia-both in a personal level and a professional level. It goes UNDIAGNOSED in thousands of people across all ages. Within Corrections, the percentage of students we serve with Dyslexia is incredibly high. Recent Federal legislation has opened the door to reforms- but this emphasis hasn't taken on importance yet in the state that I reside in. I am a Microsoft Geek- that is the biggest resource that has been available for me to use in adult ed. I have a PowerPoint that explains some basic facts about Dyslexia. Plus a self-made Dyslexia Screener that I put together by combing through several online resources. The out of pocket cost for the ed psych testing my child needed to diagnose dyslexia & dyscalculia was close to $2,000. Our students most likely didn't ever have the money to pay for that, nor will they. Please do what you can to research on your own! You can find ways to help. If you need suggestions, comb through more of my resources.

The class provides opportunities for candidates to learn how to teach the basic and essential fundamentals of physical education for K-6th grade students. The central knowledge is about children’s motor skill development along with the emotional and social aspects related to physical activity. Teachers will learn the key aspects of a physical education lesson, which include a warm-up activity, the lesson plan (skill development and game applications), and closure. As a total lesson, at least half the time is spent in moderate to vigorous activity.
The course also addresses classroom management techniques, safety and liability, kinesiology, and instructional techniques. It incorporates discussions of multicultural aspects and special needs populations, and concludes with ideas for integrating physical education with academic subjects such as mathematics, language, and natural and social sciences.

Salmon play an important role in the ways of life, culture, history, and resilience of the tribes of this region. The tribes of Washington State and the Pacific Northwest have always depended on salmon as a primary source of food. Overfishing, roads, dams, pollution, and other human practices have been a growing threat to the survival of salmon, which has impacted fishing, salmon-eaters, and the environment. These lessons introduce to children the role of salmon in the history and culture of the first peoples of our region.
The Honoring the Salmon lessons are designed to be taught as a series but can also be taught individually, adapted for each grade level, K-3. They can easily be integrated into science units on salmon, water or watersheds. Content knowledge from these lessons can provide background knowledge for 3rd grade and 4th grade Social Studies CBAs.
NOTE: These lessons are designed around fiction and non-fiction books that are not a part of the STI curriculum. Most of them are easily available through public libraries. Some may need to be purchased.
