In this discussion paper by colleagues at Harvard University, the future of a large U.S. electric vehicle market is examined based on key questions. To answer these questions, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs), and internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) are compared with current and projected future lifecycle costs and various scenarios (change in gas/electricity cost, battery cost, customer discount rates, and vehicle efficiency). It is found that currently BEVs and PHEVs are $4000-$5000 more than ICEVs based on lifecycle cost, but in 10-20 years BEVs will be $1000-$7000 cheaper than ICEVs while PHEVs will possible remain more expensive than ICEVs unless battery cost drops significantly and gas prices rise. It is concluded that for the electric vehicle market to increase substantially in the next 10-20 years, gas prices will need to be $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon while battery technology and range increase. However, this can be accelerated with government assistance.

It is a paper exercise that simulates a real outdoor adventure into the Wind River Mountains and must be used with real USGS quadrangles. This exercise can be easily re-framed into your local context. An urban example might be taking a drive to the country (or other local favorite) and having a car breakdown. Then, getting lost and having to navigate the way home.

In this problem-based learning (PBL) scenario, students prepare a presentation for investors showing how their fishing company has a significant advantage because it locates upwelling zones and fishing areas using TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) and other satellite data. Prior to launching the PBL, students learn about wind: the topics of air pressure, coriolis effect, upwelling and the role of differential heating on the atmosphere are explored in classroom demonstrations. Materials required include a beaker, coffee grounds, drinking straw, balloon, flashlight, and turntable. In spring 2020, the world was hit by a pandemic that spread globally by March, causing universities and most of the world to move to remote means. Summer field camps, long hailed as a rite of passage in the geosciences, were cancelled throughout the US. The community moved quickly, with NAGT developing remote learning tools and arranging for sharing and collaboration between instructors and institutions. As such, UNAVCO (GETSI) and University of Northern Colorado embarked on a data collection campaign for a summer field course entitled "Geoscience Field Issues Using High-Resolution Topography to Understand Earth Surface Processes" -- originally slated for in-person teaching. The team collected GNSS data, drone imagery for use in structure from motion, and terrestrial laser scanning from a site near Greeley, Colorado on the Poudre River. This assignment follows Sheep Draw SfM and uses an Open Source software, CloudCompare (https://www.danielgm.net/cc/) that allows for viewing and manipulation of point clouds. This exercise will walk you through 1) basic operations and use in CloudCompare, and 2) use of an Open-Source plugin in CloudCompare called CANUPO (http://nicolas.brodu.net/en/recherche/canupo/) that allows for point cloud classification. This unit can be used with any point cloud dataset. An optional activity imports rasters created in CloudCompare and conducts additional analyses in ESRI ArcGIS.
