This book has been created to provide a framework for building your skills in writing and critical thinking. It provides access to published samples from professional authors along with essay drafts from ESL students who have polished their skills in their respective writing courses.

The themes in the readings will give you a variety of topics to discuss with your classmates, which may inspire your own deeper thinking and writing. Overall, we hope that as you proceed through these chapters, you will build confidence and develop your voice in the classroom and beyond.

America by the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa, a PBS documentary series produced by the Harlem-based Futuro Media Group, reveals how dramatic changes in the composition and demographics of the United States are playing out across the country.

This reader contains nine original stories about healing, discovery, survival, relationships, justice, and connections to the land explored through the lens of the plant world. These stories, written specifically for adults, are designed to accompany the BC Reads: Adult Literacy Fundamental English - Course Pack 1. This level 1 reader, one of a series of six readers, is roughly equivalent to beginner to grade 1.5 in the K-12 system. Font size and line spacing can be adjusted in the online view, and have been enhanced for the print and PDF versions for easier reading. This reader has been reviewed by subject experts from colleges and universities.

College ESL Writers: Applied Grammar and Composing Strategies for Success is designed as a comprehensive grammar and writing etext for high intermediate and advanced level non-native speakers of English. We open the text with a discussion on the sentence and then break it down into its elemental components, before reconstructing them into effective sentences with paragraphs and larger academic assignments. Following that, we provide instruction in paragraph and essay writing with several opportunities to both review the fundamentals as well as to demonstrate mastery and move on to more challenging assignments.

As part of this nine to ten-lesson unit, students utilize news stories supported by the Pulitzer Center from Time for Kids and Mission Local to familiarize themselves with the concept of an underreported migration story. They will then research stories, summarize and share the gist of what they read to their small groups and to the entire class. As part of their conversations, students will note key details and themes from the stories they explored about migration and consider why these stories could be considered “underreported.”

This Open Educational Resource (OER) web-book aims to empower English teachers from across the globe to design their own, authentic, corpus-based lessons by showcasing a range of ideas for creating corpus-informed teaching materials using online resources.

Pre-service trainee teachers from Osnabrück University (Germany) contributed the chapters as part of three English Pedagogy Masters of Education seminars taught by Elen Le Foll.

The introductory chapter “About the project” outlines the rationale and development of the project and discusses how various challenges were overcome. The remaining Lesson Ideas chapters are organised according to the school type for which they were developed.

Part I is dedicated to corpus-informed lesson ideas for primary schools.
Part II showcases corpus-informed lesson ideas for secondary schools.
Part III explores the use of corpora in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and bilingual secondary education.
Part IV presents corpus-informed lesson ideas for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and vocational education.

For teachers and teacher trainees entirely new to corpora, we recommend selecting one or two chapters of interest and following the step-by-step instructions in order to recreate the corpus-informed materials proposed by the chapter authors. As you work your way through these, you will find that the various ideas and methods outlined in all the chapters can easily be transferred to an infinite range of different language foci, topics, and educational contexts.

In addition, most of the chapters include worksheets that can be downloaded as individual PDFs in just one click. Thus, this book also provides a low-threshold introduction to working with corpus-informed materials for teachers with no previous knowledge of corpora. It is hoped that the experience of using these “oven-ready” corpus-informed materials, which require little to no preparation time, will encourage teachers to subsequently invest time in working through a selection of the book’s chapters in order to, in due course, be able to pick their own ingredients and create entirely new and delicious corpus-informed dishes!

Each chapter, or recipe, has a different focus which may be lexical, grammatical, or phraseological, and focuses on a different set of language and/or interdisciplinary skills. The chapters are all similarly structured. The chapter contributors begin by describing their lesson’s learning objectives and outlining the rationale for their choice of topic, corpus, and corpus tool. They then guide the reader through all the necessary steps to create their proposed corpus-informed materials with clear, tutorial-like and illustrated step-by-step instructions. In many instances, the authors also provide instructions for their lesson tasks, as well as (possible) solutions. At the end of each chapter, you will also find additional options and ideas to expand or adapt the proposed lesson to the taste buds of your students.

Students explore the idea of ńcrossing boundariesî through bilingual, spoken-word poetry, culminating in a poetry slam at school or in the community.

I know a LOT about Dyslexia-both in a personal level and a professional level. It goes UNDIAGNOSED in thousands of people across all ages. Within Corrections, the percentage of students we serve with Dyslexia is incredibly high. Recent Federal legislation has opened the door to reforms- but this emphasis hasn't taken on importance yet in the state that I reside in.
I am a Microsoft Geek- that is the biggest resource that has been available for me to use in adult ed. I have a PowerPoint that explains some basic facts about Dyslexia. Plus a self-made Dyslexia Screener that I put together by combing through several online resources.
The out of pocket cost for the ed psych testing my child needed to diagnose dyslexia & dyscalculia was close to $2,000. Our students most likely didn't ever have the money to pay for that, nor will they. Please do what you can to research on your own! You can find ways to help. If you need suggestions, comb through more of my resources.

In this module we discuss community in a variety of ways, from fiction and non-fiction. The module is mostly face to face, with online follow-up to practice written expression of their experience. The module finishes with a guest speaker from a First Nation, Miwok Rancheria. This guest builds on the readings, expands our ideas of who is in our community (city), and provides a face-to-face introduction and discussion with a member of the Miwok Nation (an experience no student had up to this point). We created this site to share the lesson plans and other materials that we use in this Listening/Speaking Level F class with other ESL teachers -- click around and use what works for you! This is a 10-week course at LCC, but you can pick and choose from the 8 chapters for a shorter or longer term. The chapters can be covered in any order.

Lane Community College's Intensive English Language Program offers 6 levels (A=beginner, F=college transition). This site was designed for Listening/Speaking Level F, which is a class that teaches listening and note-taking strategies focused especially on lecture listening, as well as presentation, pronunciation, conversation, and academic discussion skills.

LCC ESL Students in Level F take three separate intensive classes (Writing, Listening/Speaking, and Reading for a total of 20 in-class contact hours per week). Prior to the re-imagining of this class and the creation of this site, each Level F class had a different textbook with different thematic progressions. Students experienced cognitive overload with the demand to learn the vocabulary, concepts, and skills of the three separate classes. In addition, students in our department are often from marginalized backgrounds and can find it financially difficult to purchase the three separate textbooks.

In order to lessen students' financial and cognitive burdens and create more connections between the three classes, we used the topics from the Reading textbook (Academic Encounters Level 4: Reading and Writing, 2nd edition, Cambridge 2014) to find freely-available authentic videos or recorded audio for the Listening/Speaking class.

Over the past year, students have expressed appreciation for the reduced cost of taking the course. In addition, they have shown increased interest and engagement in the course due to the authentic, real-life materials and complementary nature of the three Level F classes.

Working within Correctional Education, I have had many students who were LEP/ ESL and had great language barriers. I have had other tutor/workers who were extremely skilled and fluent in both languages. I asked my tutor worker to convert some of the English sentences in these random PowerPoints into Spanish. We are able to give students the GED exams in Spanish where I work.

I have several LEP students right now that don't quite have extra time to come down to study in person in the school. I worked up some neat templates to create simple mini-books that highlight common things here in America. Workers, Health Issues, Transportation, etc...
