Welcome to Music 1300, Music: Its Language History, and Culture. The course has a number of interrelated objectives:
1. To introduce you to works representative of a variety of music traditions.These include the repertoires of Western Europe from the Middle Agesthrough the present; of the United States, including art music, jazz, folk, rock, musical theater; and from at least two non-Western world areas (Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Indian subcontinent).
2. To enable you to speak and write about the features of the music you study,employing vocabulary and concepts of melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, timbre,and form used by musicians.
3. To explore with you the historic, social, and cultural contexts and the role of class, ethnicity, and gender in the creation and performance of music,including practices of improvisation and the implications of oral andnotated transmission.
4. To acquaint you with the sources of musical sounds—instruments and voices fromdifferent cultures, found sounds, electronically generated sounds; basic principlesthat determine pitch and timbre.
5. To examine the influence of technology, mass media, globalization, and transnationalcurrents on the music of today.
The chapters in this reader contain definitions and explanations of musical terms and concepts,short essays on subjects related to music as a creative performing art, biographical sketchesof major figures in music, and historical and cultural background information on music fromdifferent periods and places.

Music Theory for the 21st–Century Classroom is an openly–licensed online college music theory textbook that is meant to take the student from the basics of reading and writing pitches and rhythms through twelve–tone technique and minimalism over the course of four semesters. This text differs from other music theory textbooks by focusing less on four–part (SATB) voiceleading and more on relating harmony to the phrase. Also, in traditional music theory textbooks, there is little emphasis on motivic analysis and analysis of melodic units smaller than the phrase. Whenever possible, examples from popular music and music from film and musical theater are included to illustrate melodic and harmonic concepts, usually within the context of the phrase. Practice exercises (with answers), homework exercises, and practice tests are included.

As taught in Autumn/Spring Semesters 2009/2010

This resource presents material from four different courses taught across the School of American and Canadian Studies and Film and Television Studies. It addresses various aspects of nineteenth and early twentieth century American entertainment culture.

You can view module outlines for 4 modules taught within the school:

* American Drama (undergraduate year 3 level)
* American Sensations (undergraduate year 3 level)
* Film History (undergraduate year 1 level)
* Emergence of Mass Culture (undergraduate year 2 level)

The information contained within the module outlines includes: module objectives, lecture schedules, reading lists, teaching and learning methods, module resources, modes of assessment and essay questions.

This resource also presents examples of materials from each of the modules listed above. The materials available address:

* The Sensational Novels of the 1850's (from the American Sensations module)
* Mass Market Magazines around 1900 (from the Emergence of Mass Culture module)
* The movie Palaces of the 1920's (from the Film History module)
* The Depression-Era Theatre of the 1930's (from the American Drama module)

Suitable for: undergraduate study years one to three depending upon topic selected (see individual module titles above for more information)

Dr Matthew Pethers, Dr Graham Thompson, Dr Paul Grainge, Dr John Fagg, School of American and Canadian Studies.

Matthew Pethers is a Lecturer in American Intellectual and Cultural History in the School of American Studies. His research largely focuses on the American Enlightenment and early 19th century print culture, but he also has an ongoing interest in the history of the American stage.

Graham Thompson is the author of Male Sexuality under Surveillance: The Office in American Literature (2003), The Business of America: The Cultural Construction of a Post-War Nation (2004) and American Culture in the 1980s (2007). He is currently working on a new research project on Herman Melville's magazine fiction which re-locates Melville within the print culture industry of the 1850s and explores in more detail how magazine publishing developed and operated in order to better understand how cultural products like Melville's fiction were formed and circulated within it.

Paul Grainge is Associate Professor of Film Studies at the University of Nottingham. His teaching and research focuses on Hollywood and contemporary media culture. He is the author of Brand Hollywood: Selling Entertainment in a Global Media Age (Routledge, 2008), Monochrome Memories: Nostalgia and Style in Retro America (Praeger, 2002), Memory and Popular Film (as editor) (Manchester UP, 2003), and Film Histories: An Introduction and Reader (as co-editor) (Edinburgh UP, 2007). Within the Institute of Film and Television Studies at Nottingham, he teaches modules on film history, the cultural industries, the New Hollywood, and media memories.

Dr John Fagg is a lecturer in the School of American and Canadian Studies at the University of Nottingham. His research focuses on literature and painting around 1900 and the representation of everyday life. He teaches courses on American Literature, The Emergence of Mass Culture and the art and literature of New York City.

Carmen must give a presentation in her Spanish 3 class for Hispanic Heritage Month, but she doesn’t speak Spanish. Is she less of a Latina, as some girls think? “No Hablo Español,” written by Rosa Estevez of Fairdale High School in Louisville, explores how language and cultural perceptions affect one’s sense of identity. It was among the seven short plays produced by the 2017 New Voices Young Playwrights Festival at Actors Theatre of Louisville.

Oroonoko, or, The Royal Slave

When she published Oroonoko in 1688, Aphra Behn created one of the foundational myths of her period and of the century that followed. The story of the noble African prince tricked into slavery resonated powerfully with people in the English-speaking world for generations. This was even the case for those who never read Behn’s book. Behn’s work was adapted into a play entitled Oroonoko: A Tragedy by Thomas Southerne in 1695, and that version of the story–one that differs in key ways from Behn’s original–was one of the mainstays of the theater in Britain into the nineteenth century. Oroonoko was, like Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe or Jonathan Swift’s Lemuel Gulliver, a character who was introduced in a work of fiction in the decades around 1700 who would go on to have a long life outside the pages of the work in which he originally appeared.

We have developed this open access book for universities and colleges responding to the needs and interests of students preparing for careers in health or even seeking to add a “health track” to their majors or minors. Para vivir offers an introduction to reading different literary and cultural texts from the Spanish-speaking world with a thematic focus on health. It can be used as an alternative to the standard Introduction to Hispanic Literature course texts, as it also teaches techniques of close reading. It incorporates authors from seventeen counties, has an almost even representation of male and female authors and diverse communities in the Hispanic world (European, Creole, Afro Hispanic, Latinx, Indigenous, Jewish). In addition to introductions to reading different genres (narrative, poetry, theater, and film) we have scaffolded supporting material such as biographies, notes on the historical contexts, pre and post-reading questions.

The Show Must Go On! American Theater in the Great Depression

The Great Depression had an enormous impact on theatre across the United States. Productions decreased dramatically, audiences shrank, and talented writers, performers, and directors fled the industry to find work in Hollywood. But despite adversity, the show went on. The public construction projects of the Works Progress Administration built new theaters in cities across America. The Federal Theatre Project was established to fund theatre and performances across the country providing work to unemployed artists. This influx of new artists had transformed the industry, opening theatre to new voices, themes, and audiences. This exhibition explores these Depression-era changes and their impact on American theater. This exhibition was created as part of the DPLA’s Digital Curation Program by the following students as part of Professor Anthony Cocciolo's course "Projects in Digital Archives" in the School of Information and Library Science at Pratt Institute: Kathleen Dowling, Laura Marte Piccini, and Matthew Schofield.
