Making Sound-Reactive Clothing

Students apply sound-activated light-up EL wire to create personalized light-up clothing outfits. During the project, students become familiar with the components, code and logic to complete circuits and employ their imaginations to real-world applications of technology. Acting as if they are engineers, students are challenged to incorporate electroluminescent wire to regular clothing to make attention-getting safety clothing for joggers and cyclists. Luminescent EL wire stays cool, making it ideal to sew into wearable projects. They use the SparkFun sound detector and the EL sequencer circuit board to flash the EL wire to the rhythm of ambient sound, such as music, clapping, talking—or roadway traffic sounds! The combination of sensors, microcontrollers and EL wire enables a wide range of feedback and control options.

Maths and Islamic art & design

This resource provides a variety of information and activities that teachers may like to use with their students to explore the Islamic Middle East collections at the V&A. It can be used to support learning in Maths and Art. Included in this resource are sections on:

Principles of Islamic art and design
Pre-visit activities
Activities to do in the museum
Activities to do back at school
Islamic art explores the geometric systems that depend upon the regular division of the circle and the study of Islamic art increases appreciation and understanding of geometry. The use of these geometric systems creates a harmony among Islamic decorative arts and architecture, which is consistent with the Islamic belief that all creation is harmoniously interrelated.

Approaching an abstract subject in a concrete way provides a means of extending maths into other curriculum areas. The context of the Museum expands and enriches students' appreciation of the application of geometry in a cultural context and develops the sense of different cultural identities. Students have the opportunity to become familiar with the relationship between geometry and design and this can give confidence to students who have never seen themselves as 'good at art'.

Metropolis (1927) is a German expressionist science-fiction drama film directed by Fritz Lang with screenplay by Thea von Harbou. It was adapted with Lang from von Harbou's novel (1925) also called Metropolis. It stars Gustav Fröhlich, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, and Brigitte Helm. Made in Germany during the Weimar period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia that is sharply divided between the working class and elite. Original Score by Gottfried Huppertz. Freder the son of the wealthy and powerful city master, Joh Fredersen, falls in love with Maria, a prophetic figure to the working class. The film length was cut back after its original German premiere, with restoration efforts finding footage recovered from Argentina and New Zealand to bring it close its original. The film has a fairy tale like plot of uniting the classes with an ending title reading "The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart." It is considered to be one of the best 100 films of all time. Visit this link to see a shortened version with the Music score composed by: Giorgio Moroder, Gottfried Huppertz, Thomas Köner, Ronnie Cramer.
