This short lesson was designed in collaboration with a 7th grade Life Science teacher (Paul Jeffery). The idea behind the lesson is to help students better understand ecological and geographical classifications by teaching them at the same time in their Life Science class and their Geography class. Teaching the two classifications together will help reinforce the idea of classification. While this lesson would best be taught outdoors it can also be adapted to the indoors.

Exploring sustainability through water cycle connections
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

During this module students use multiple experiences (reading, video,
the outdoors, a survey of their water footprints, writing, and lots of
discussion) to examine how life today, in comparison to pre-industrial
times, makes our connections to water virtually invisible. Students use
the class's water footprint results to find out how agricultural and
industrial water uses link us to people distant in both place and time.
They weigh the consequences of these invisible connections in creating
the lost sense of dependence and responsibility that typifies
unsustainability. Students study the variability of water footprints
within our class to help identify more sustainable personal choices.
They consider the activity of a local watershed association to educate
and involve people in improving the quality of local streams as a model
of how community action can accomplish what individuals cannot.

This assignment requires students to visit a local geologic feature. Students choose a field site, visit it and observe features such as weathering, rock type, folding, or faulting. At their field site, they are encouraged to make sketches and take photographs. They will turn in a description of the site, geologic origin, and geomorphologic evolution. This assignment is especially useful for non-majors who may not normally be interested in outdoor activities.

How Might We Design a Pizza Garden for Maine?
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC
Rating
0.0 stars

How can you collaborate with partner/s to design a garden that grows ingredients for a pizza? Your design will be specific to the conditions of the Maine community where you live, and you will have several important decisions to make about its location. Will the garden be indoors, outdoors, virtual, or a combination?

Your partner/s can be friends, family, classmates, community members, or you can choose to work alone. Using a Google Slides Template that you copy and download, you will document your pizza garden designs. Your final garden design will be shared using a slideshow, video, or photograph format, with an audience that you choose -- You Tube, your local School Board, Google Classroom and a favorite teacher, Google Sites, social media, family and friends, or create your own hashtag.

Research will help you decide what the best growing situations are for your Pizza Garden plants and your environment. You will explore various designs and then, based on your new learning, you will design a garden that represents your thinking behind the choices you made. Finally, you will use the method that works best for you and share your Pizza Garden design with others.

Again, all of this work can be done collaboratively, with partners, or by you independently.

So, what is the best design for a pizza garden in Maine? It's up to YOU!
