Tectonic Geomorphology: Exploring activity on the San Andreas fault with ArcGIS
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

In this activity students develop an hypothesis as how slope morphology reflects the timing of motion on a fault, in this case the classic Wallace Creek segment of the San Andreas. It is a scaffolded, problem-based exercise that uses ArcGIS and LiDAR data to test their hypothesis.

This Western Mining History database uses Mineral Resources Data System to list known Colorado historical mines by county. Each county site has links to the known mines within its borders. Some are known and named, others are unnamed. Mines should be assumed to be on private property unless other research is conducted. Data provided for each mine site include: Name, State, County, Elevation, Primary Mineral Mined, Latitude and Longitude and a link to Google Maps. Photos are provided where available. Additional information for some Mines are satellite photos, and ownership, business and historical records. Mining History is an historical site that provides information on mining, mining towns, the gold and silver rush, and Photos and maps of the western United States. This is a great database for student historical research or data and statistics classes. Consider becoming a member or making a donation to help further the work of the site.

Thin-Skinned Models for Undergraduate Teaching Labs "Flour Structures
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

The lab described here a simple, inexpensive way for an undergraduate class to create model thin-skinned wedges A simple model using flour and marker chalk, pushed across the base of a box using a piece of wood, can be used to demonstrate many aspects of the growth of thin-skinned mountain belts. Depending upon the strength of the dcollement, the cross-sectional taper of the deforming wedge will be thin or broad, internal deformation will be mild or intense, and the structures either close to symmetric or strongly forward-vergent, just as in the analogous natural thrust belts.
Key words:

thin-skinned tectonics

Tracking Groundwater Pollution
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

This is a teaching module presenting an introduction to modeling ground water pollution, directed to undergraduate students in applied mathematics. It begins with a brief discussion of Darcy's law concerning the flow of a fluid through a porous medium. A mathematical model that uses field data to track ground-water contamination is presented. Students working with the module will write a MATLAB script to obtain a numerical solution of the model and apply it to investigate a real event of groundwater pollution.

Transitioning from Excel to MATLAB Diffusion Models
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

This activity is part of a larger module that introduces students to two different ways to model chemical diffusion in minerals: 1) 1D diffusion in Excel using finite differences and 2) 1D diffusion in MATLAB using the same equations. It is designed to help students apply diffusion equations derived previously in class to understand natural zonation of elements in minerals. The students build the model first in Excel, and then in MATLAB to obtain the timescales of diffusive re-equilibration related to magma storage and transport at Klauea Volcano, Hawai'i. The major goals are to help students transition from visual platforms (e.g., Excel) to writing computer code (e.g., in MATLAB), implementing for loops for iterative calculations, and thinking about how the geologic parameters (temperature, pressure, fO2) affect the model results.
