This a BRIEF overview of Creative Commons licensing for my colleagues (administrators, faculty, and staff) at Central Alabama Community College. This learning opportunity was funded by a grant from ACHE & ACCS, and due to current policy regarding copyright, the College will have to authorize permission to use, edit, &/or redistribute. It is hoped that these policies are being re-visited for the betterment of OER creation and use in Alabama.
This Module outlines Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR), a strategy for helping students to improve their reading comprehension skills. In CSR, students work together in small groups to apply comprehension strategies as they read text from a content area, such as social studies or science (est. completion time: 1 hour).
In this lab, students are walked through a hands-on exercise converting digital numbers to at sensor brightness temperatures using Level 1B Landsat ETM+ thermal imagery acquired over Tallahassee, Florida, USA on November 06, 1999.
Students can sometimes have emotional outbursts in school settings. This fact will not surprise many teachers, who have had repeated experience in responding to serious classroom episodes of student agitation. Such outbursts can be attributed in part to the relatively high incidence of mental health issues among children and youth. It is estimated, for example, that at least one in five students in American schools will experience a mental health disorder by adolescence (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1999). But even students not identified as having behavioral or emotional disorders may occasionally have episodes of agitation triggered by situational factors such as peer bullying, frustration over poor academic performance, stressful family relationships, or perceived mistreatment by educators.

The goal of this activity is for both me and the students to learn how well prepared they are for the mid term. In Wednesday's class I tell them we will be doing an assessment on Friday. For Friday I prepare a series of questions that cover the likely content of the mid term and print them out in large print, attaching them to self adhesive poster paper. I paste these up around the classroom and randomly break the class into teams of 3-5. Each team works on "their" question for ~8 minutes, answering the questions on the poster paper and adding what they are puzzled about. The each team moves to the next question/poster and works 3-5 minutes on it, absorbing what has been written and adding their own ideas and questions. The carousel continues to rotate every ~5 minutes until the teams arrive back at their original poster. Each team reads what has been written and prepares a summary. At this point the teams clarify items they do not understand. Monday's assignment for each team is to come to class with a better hand drawn poster and report to the class, answering some of the unanswered questions from Friday.

In the first part of the exercise, students examine a variety of ArcMaps to work out what data sets and techniques were used and to develop a list of the characteristics of effective, attractive, and complete maps. In part 2, students explore a GIS tutorial of cartographic techniques. You might also be interested in our Full GIS course with links to all assignments.
