Students are assigned to read one of the three papers on tectonic geomorphology (landscape evolution) published by Nature in 2003 (Burbank et al., Dadson et al., and Reiners et al.). All also read the editorial by Molnar from the same issue. They work with others who read the same paper to understand the paper and then jigsaw into new groups to discuss the similarities and differences between the papers and to see if they can come to any conclusions about major drivers on landscape evolution. This activity has them work on multiple levels of Blooms Taxonomy - they read and understand a paper, analyze the results of the paper, and then evaluate the paper in the context of two other papers presented by peers.

Given a cross-sectional diagram of two rock outcrops (From Earth: Portrait of a Planet 4th edition by Stephan Marshak. Copyright 2012, 2008, 2005, 2001 by W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. Used by permission of W. W. Norton & Company, Inc.), Part 1 of this activity asks students to sketch a fault structure that would explain the rock configuration. Labels for all important parts of the fault are required (hanging wall, foot wall, arrows indicating movement and the maximum stress direction). The fault must be identified as either normal or reverse. Only one of two possible solutions is required.
Given a map template, Part 2 asks students to sketch a geological map of the outcrops based on their fault from Part 1. Required elements include all lithological contacts, strike/dip symbols, structural labels and a proper legend.
Part 3 of this activity gives students the same schematic cross-section as in Part 1, except now they have to draw folds that would explain the rock configuration. Labels for the hinge line, axial plane and maximum stress direction must be included.

Preparation for this activity involves background lectures, readings, and prior exercises related to latitude, longitude, the relationship between longitude and time, seasons and solar declination, global atmospheric circulation, and global currents. In class, students work in small groups to complete a "voyage" around the North Atlantic Ocean using their prior knowledge, maps of winds and currents from their text, their notes, and a globe. This activity gives students practice using maps, discerning latitude and longitude using time and seasonal information, and using characteristics of global winds and currents to find their location.

Join Curator of Paleontology, Dr. Julia McHugh, as she teaches you how to make her famous frosted sugar cookies and throws in some neat dinosaur facts! Dinosaur Cut-Out Sugar Cookies:
1 cup of sugar ¼ cup of softened butter ½ tsp. of vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1 tsp. of salt 1 tsp. of baking soda 2 ½ cups of flour In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking soda, and salt together and set aside. Cream together butter and sugar until fluffy, and sugar completely dissolves. Add eggs and vanilla to butter/sugar mixture and beat with mixer until well-blended (about 2-4 minutes). Gradually add the flour mixture, stirring well. Once entire mixture is well creamed together, divide into 2-4 “loafs” and wrap in waxed paper. Chill dough for 2-4 hours. Rolling out cookies: Cover surface with a light dusting of flour to prevent dough from sticking. Rub flour onto rolling pin and cookie cutters. Remove dough and roll “loafs” into a flat layer about ¼ inch thick (thinner for crispy cookies, thicker for doughy cookies). Use cookie cutters to cut dinosaur shapes. Peel away dough from in between shapes and add this remnant dough to the next loaf. Place cookies on non-stick or greased cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes, or until edges turn golden brown. Let cookies completely cool on wire rack or on parchment paper before decorating. Vanilla Butter Cream Frosting ½ cup of softened butter (not melted) 1 ½ tsp. of vanilla extract 5-6 Tbsp. of milk 4 ½ cups confectionary (powdered) sugar Cream butter using spoon or spatula until light and fluffy. Gradually add in the rest of the ingredients, beating the mixture as you add them. If too runny, add small amounts of additional sugar, or if too stiff add additional milk. Beat frosting until desired consistency. Divide into bowls and add food coloring.
