In this lesson, students read about incidences of racial discrimination and how those incidences were met with methods of protests. They engage in an activity that matches programs for low-income people with the type of economic inequity the program addresses and observe an activity simulating tax payments and transfers.

Secrets of the Hibernators STEM Kit. The Natural Sciences Education & Outreach Center collaborates with CSU faculty, National Parks and citizen science programs to translate their current scientific research into unique STEM experiences for students in the form of Educational Kits that can be checked out. Each kit contains just about all of the materials needed (minus common things like water and paper towels) to explore some really interesting scientific research topics.The kits are available for teachers and informal educators in Colorado to check out for a duration of a week by submitting either a local pickup form or a delivery form available at the linked website. This video segment adapted from Northwest Indian College reveals how Native American life and knowledge is connected to natural cycles.

This module is part of the course "Intro to Mechatronics" at Lawrence Technological University and was developed through seed funding from the CAAT. This module consists of a PowerPoint presentation and accelerometer LabVIEW lab. Discussed in the Power Point are automotive sensors, actuators, and their use in powertrain (energy use, drivability and performance), body (occupant needs), and chassis (vehicle handling and safety). Some of the types of these sensors are rotational (crank or cam position), pressure (EVAP system or MAP), exhaust gas (oxygen sensor), and actuators (air bag inflators, relays, and injectors). Also included is a section on DC and AC motors operation and their automotive applications (HEV drive motor, window motor, and seat motor). The lab will introduce students to developing data acquisition for sensors using National Instruments LabVIEW software. For instructors who would like solutions to the lab, please contact the CAAT.

Students listen to a story about sheep that go shopping for a gift. Unfortunately, they don't have quite enough money and must barter wool to obtain the gift they want. The students discuss what barter is and suggest other solutions to the sheep's problems. Students earn cotton balls and pennies for work that they do. They use the cotton balls to decorate a sheep and use extra cotton balls and pennies to buy additional decorations for their sheep.

Students take virtual field trips to explore air quality research sites and investigate the causes, effects, and solutions to nitrogen deposition in Rocky Mountain National Park during this module.

Students explore the basic physics behind walking, and the design and engineering of shoes to accommodate different gaits. They are introduced to pressure, force and impulse as they relate to shoes, walking and running. Students learn about the mechanics of walking, shoe design and common gait misalignments that often lead to injury.

Since 1885 the Shoshone people have been without buffalo on their land. After decades of effort beginning in the 1990’s a coalition of individuals and organizations have taken the first step in returning the North American Bison to their native lands. In the accompanying lesson plan (found in the Support Materials) students will understand that nowhere is this action more culturally and ecologically significant than on the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Students will explore the significance of the buffalo to the Shoshone people living on the Wind River Reservation.
Students will learn that through traditional concepts of understanding, the Shoshone people, as well as many other Plains tribes, were able to survive using the buffalo.
Students will research the controversial issue surrounding the return of the buffalo to the Wind River Reservation and understand how arguments against returning them almost derailed efforts by the Shoshone tribe.

A drum like this is made from thinned deer hide or rawhide. It is fancy and has lacing which was placed on the drum when wet. This drum has a bird on it that could be a crane with a snake in its mouth. There are two basic colors: sky colors and grass colors. In the accompanying lesson plan (found in the Support Materials) students will understand how everything on this drum seems to talk about life as described by the bird and the florals in front.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Students will identify a variety of traditional uses for plants.
Students will make predictions about plant pigments.
Students will understand the traditional use of plants through viewing the video and will be able to demonstrate how the materials provided by nature and animals allowed the Shoshone to create items used in everyday life.

In the accompanying lesson plan (found in the Support Materials) students will gain an understanding of the Shoshone tribe while learning about the Shoshone Parfleche from the WyomingPBS video.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

students will write 3-4 sentences stating/explaining how the Shoshone Parfleche is used.
Students will create an individual parfleche, designed with a line of symmetry, the use of a meter stick for specific measurements and the ability to use creativity to choose their own designs.
