Each student becomes an expert on a natural disaster, investigating and discovering how they can prepare for it. Students initially create traditional motivational posters using paper, pencils, markers, and crayons. Then, students create an electronic version to motivate others to prepare for natural disasters. Next, students create storyboards/scripts and digital stories on a natural disaster of their choosing to inform others of ways to prepare for natural disasters. This lesson was created as part of a collaboration between Alabama Technology in Motion and ALEX.

In this archive there are two activities/assignments suitable for use in a CS0 or Intro course which uses Python.
In the first activity, students are asked to "fill in the code" in a series of short programs that compute a similarity metric (cosine similarity) for text documents. This involves string tokenization, and frequency counting using Python string methods and datatypes.

This activity guides students through the process needfinding to identify areas of need for their creation of a technology for the "public good." Students will conduct contextual inquiry to identify the needs of their target audience.
Comments Although this activity can be used in isolation, it is intended to be part of a series guiding students towards the creation of a front-end of a website. The series (all published as OER) consist of:
a) Needfinding b) Personas, Scenarios and Storyboards c) Front-end Website Design and Development d) Accessibility Evaluation

This record includes training materials associated with 'Network Know-how and Data Handling' workshops offered by Australia's Academic Research Network (AARNet). The workshops are delivered to library and eResearch staff at universities, as well as researcher communities, as train-the-trainer events, part of a broader infrastructure literacy strategy.
This workshop is a ‘train-the-trainer’ session that covers topics such as jargon busting, network literacy and data movement solutions. The workshop will also provide a peek at some collaborative research tools such as Jupyter Notebooks and CloudStor. You will learn about networks, integrated tools, data and storage and where all these things fit in the researcher’s toolkit.
This workshop is targeted at staff who would like to be more confident in giving advice to researchers about the options available to them. It is especially tailored for those with little to no technical knowledge and includes a hands-on component, using basic programming commands, but requires no previous knowledge of programming.

Network topology is the arrangement of the elements of a communication network. Network topology can be used to define or describe the arrangement of various types of telecommunication networks, including command and control radio networks, industrial fieldbusses and computer networks.

There are different types of networks. Common types of networks are: WAN and LAN. There are other types of networks as well: SAN, MAN, BAN, IAN and others. Each network type helps us understand the purpose, design goals, and scale of the network. For example if we say a network is a LAN, we can assume it is a local network, probably in one building or in a reasonably restricted area. We might make an assumption that a LAN has a certain number of devices connected to it. However, if we say a network is a WAN, we might assume it is much larger, and designed to accommodate a much, much larger number of devices.

The digital age has created the need for a new kind of literacy-a literacy that empowers news consumers to determine whether information is credible, reliable and truthful. This is not just a skill; it is a new core competency for the 21st century. So-called “fake news” is hard to spot and spreads easily, leading to disagreements over basic facts. The antidote to the growing challenges posed by this digital revolution is news literacy. This mini news literacy course includes two three-hour sessions that will teach anyone to become a more critical consumer of news.

Students learn the functions of pre-programmed microcontroller units such as the LilyMini ProtoSnap as they use them to create light-up pennants with LED components. Students design their own felt pennants and sew on circuit components using conductive thread. This activity gives students hands-on experience with engineering technologies while making creative pennants with LED lights that can illuminate in three pre-programmed sequences: all on, breathing, and twinkle.

This website features many of the OER conversion projects completed at John Jay College over the past few years. Class conversions using the Blackboard platform are not represented because of the BB firewall. These are not the actual LibGuides, but content from the LibGuides, using the LibGuide platform for access. The entire website is public.
The left navigation panel displays the academic departments with the overview and objective of the department. Also, navigation to the specific departmental classes, with corresponding OER content, are found at the bottom of the academic department pages. You can also directly navigate to the specific converted class, by clicking on the course title under the department tab. When clicking on a specific class (e.g. Science 110), the link takes you to the course description, learning outcomes of the course and a link to the OER content for the specific course. The OER content features creative commons OER Textbooks, vetted open Internet sites, academic journal articles and library owned streaming video, requiring a login to the John Jay Library. Each academic department features a link to "Discussion and Comments". In addition all pages have navigation arrows to previous pages and next pages. On many of the OER content pages, the class calendar by week is featured with links to the reading assignments. In addition to the specific OER content by class, there is a link at the top of the main page to access generic OER by subject and/or topic.

This webinar walks you through the basics of creating an OSF project, structuring it to fit your research needs, adding collaborators, and tying your favorite online tools into your project structure. OSF is a free, open source web application built by the Center for Open Science, a non-profit dedicated to improving the alignment between scientific values and scientific practices. OSF is part collaboration tool, part version control software, and part data archive. It is designed to connect to popular tools researchers already use, like Dropbox, Box, Github, and Mendeley, to streamline workflows and increase efficiency.
