Human Development: College Success Full Course

HD 100A

This course focuses on empowering students to create greater success in their academic, professional, and personal lives by developing a better understanding of themselves and their choices. Students will learn various approaches to making a smooth transition to college life; develop the ability to use MHCC information and resources; apply proven strategies for motivation, goal-setting and overcoming barriers; analyze their own self-awareness, habits and values; and create greater academic, professional, and personal success.

Learning Goals and Activities
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of: MHCC technologies, tools, information & resources; the benefits of higher education; community college culture; and opportunities for student involvement.
Develop and apply growth mindset strategies for success, including but not limited to: time management, the connection between academic planning and personal goals, financial management, developing interdependence, increasing self-awareness, and exploring personal barriers.

We encourage students to adopt a growth mindset about their own learning, and at the same time, in support of school accountability and standards-based instruction, we are also faced with identifying learning gaps and deficits. Unfortunately, once those gaps are identified, we tend to focus on what students are not capable of. This strategy will help you to truly value students by shifting the focus to their strengths and how those assets can help students to develop further. Modeling a growth mindset by identifying, highlighting, and building on students' strengths, and authentically celebrating their successes helps students to continually focus on what's possible as they set goals, and decide next steps as they pursue learning opportunities.

This text gives an overview of development, beginning in the mother’s womb through about the age of eight. It starts with a look at perspectives of early childhood, including how children have been viewed historically as well as cross-culturally. Following this chapter, there is a complete overview of the important theorists that have helped to deepen and bring clarity to how children develop. These theories include psychodynamic, behavioral, social cognitive theory, cognitive theory, humanistic, multiple intelligence, growth mindset, and Bloom’s taxonomy. Understanding the implications of each theory is important foundational knowledge for the study of development.

Chapters Three and Four give an overview of the domains of development, followed by an overview of the developing brain. Chapter Five takes a look at the prenatal period, including the birth and postpartum process. Chapter Six describes development in infancy, and Chapter Seven describes the toddler years, including safety considerations that are critical for this period. Chapter Eight looks at the preschool years, including the role of peers, play, and television (and other electronics) in development. Chapter Nine concludes the text with a brief look at the start of what is known as the school-age years, universally recognized as between the ages of five and eight.
