As English teachers, we often teach novels that reflect the struggles of racism and poverty within the African American community through the twentieth century. Landmark civil rights laws in the 1960’s changed the legal landscape of freedom in our country, but equality of opportunity and economic prosperity is still hindered by political policy and racism. It is critically important to reveal these truths to students, especially students in the African American community. However, as teachers, we should also be offering solutions to economic disparity that go beyond angry rhetoric, which are based in logic and are data-driven. What are some concrete ways families and individuals can break the cycle of poverty? What kinds of services should we as a society be fighting for? How does income parity benefit all of us? What are some ways to achieve this, and achieve a society that is more meritorious and efficient? This unit uses the play, A Raisin in the Sun as a model. The dreams of the Younger family are posed to students as choices to break out of poverty. Students will research the effects of moving to a good neighborhood, home ownership, college education, and entrepreneurship as economic paths to success.

This course outline is designed for a Level 7 advanced communication course at Portland Community College. It addresses listening, speaking, pronunciation, and presentation skills within the theme of entrepreneurship by drawing inspiration from the TV show “Shark Tank” and its various incarnations in other languages/countries around the world.

The curriculum is designed for a term of 8 weeks. Each class period is 3 hours long, and the class meets twice weekly for a total of 16 class periods plus final exam. During the course, students complete several projects:

*a survey of people outside of class
*a report to the class about the survey results
*a video commercial for a new product
*a live pitch for a new product to a panel of guest “sharks”

The course outline links to all supporting materials in the form of Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Slides, Quizlets, YouTube videos, etc.

There are no simple solutions to these grand challenges! Rather the challenges cities face today require a holistic, systemic and transdisciplinary approach that spans different fields of expertise and disciplines such as urban planning, urban design, urban engineering, systems analysis, policy making, social sciences and entrepreneurship.

This MOOC is all about this integration of different fields of knowledge within the metropolitan context. The course is set up in a unique matrix format that lets you pursue your line of interest along a specific metropolitan challenge or a specific theme.

This course uses Lean Launchpad for creating entrepreneurial ventures that start small but can be scaled up fairly quickly. You should you take this class only IF you are interested in creating such ventures. This course provides real world, hands-on learning on what it's like to actually start a high-tech company. This class is not about how to write a business plan. It's not an exercise on how smart you arein a classroom, or how well you use the research library to size markets. This is a practical class essentially a lab, not a theory or "book" class. Our goal, within the constraints of a classroom and a limited amount of time, is to create an entrepreneurial experience for you with all of the pressures and demands of the real world in an early stage start up.
