This NASA animation shows the levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide over different time scales. Viewers can compare the last 400,000 years, last 1000 years, and last 25 years. The data come from the Lake Vostok ice cores (400,000 BC to about 4000 BC), Law Dome ice cores (1010 AD to 1975 AD) and Mauna Loa observations (1980 to 2005).

Mock Trial

Execution of the mock trial is the capstone of the learning modules which comprise this website. The instructor needs to function as a true sideline coach, both in the efforts leading to the trial as well as when the trial is executed. Knowing how the end goal, the trial, should flow the instructor should be effectively leading participants to prepare for the trial. Corp. includes understanding of the role of the character they are training, becoming proficient in the profession of the character and being able to communicate the characters opinion clearly in a court of law using whatever exhibits that best tell the story. The mock trial will execute more effectively if they trial attorney or actual court judge can serve the role of the mock trial judge. These persons experience will be invaluable to the trial's authenticity and effectiveness of the learning effort. If someone from the legal profession serves as a judge, it would help the overall effort for the instructor and a person to coordinate continually during the pretrial activities.

Modeling Atmospheric CO2 Data
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

In this activity, students will use actual CO2 data from the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii to create their own "Keeling Curve"; conduct an analysis of the data; and, attempt to match it to a mathematical function. They will then use the function to predict increases in CO2, both historical and future.

Daisyworld is a classic model of complex feedbacks in a simple climate system; this activity guides students through the construction of a STELLA model that can be used to experiment with the system, exploring the somewhat surprising dynamics that arise from the interplay of positive and negative feedbacks between daisies and the temperature of their environment.

Modeling Early Earth Climate with GEEBITT
Unrestricted Use

Students gain experience using a spreadsheet and working with others to decide how to conduct their model 'experiments' with the NASA GEEBITT (Global Equilibrium Energy Balance Interactive Tinker Toy). This activity helps students become more familiar with the physical processes that made Earth's early climate so different from that of today. Students also acquire first-hand experience with a limitation in modeling, specifically, parameterization of critical processes.

Modeling Earth's Energy Balance
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating

In this activity, learners use the STELLA box modeling software to determine Earth's temperature based on incoming solar radiation and outgoing terrestrial radiation. Starting with a simple black body model, the exercise gradually adds complexity by incorporating albedo, then a 1-layer atmosphere, then a 2-layer atmosphere, and finally a complex atmosphere with latent and sensible heat fluxes. With each step, students compare the modeled surface temperature to Earth's actual surface temperature, thereby providing a check on how well each increasingly complex model captures the physics of the actual system.

Modeling Interconnected Systems

This activity starts by introducing students to the ways industries in the United States use water and asking students to predict how much water is used to produce a variety of common goods. After presenting the true water footprints of the common goods, the activity introduces and explains a simplified production and supply system for an apple. Together, the class first practices brainstorming all the ways water is used to produce an apple through a structured systems brainstorming approach. In small groups, students then apply that structured systems brainstorming to assess how water is used to supply an apple to a school cafeteria. Lastly, students reflect on why less water is needed to produce certain common goods as compared to others.

Modeling Mono Lake's Water Balance
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

In this activity students build a hydrologic model of Mono Lake in MATLAB and then use the model to evaluate the California State Water Board's 1994 decision regulating diversions from the watershed and design their own water management plan for the lake.
In 1941 the natural water balance of Mono Lake was altered when the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) began diverting water from the watershed. The lake level dropped 45 feet by 1982 threatening the local environment. After a long legal battle the California State Water Board issued an order (D. 1631) limiting water diversions by LADWP in order to return the lake to a desirable level. As of June 2019 the lake surface has yet to reach the target elevation.
In developing a water-balance model of Mono Lake students learn to idealize a hydrologic system as stocks and flows, translate their stock and flow diagram into a water balance equation and solve this equation over time using the forward Euler method. Once students have a working lake model they use MATLAB built-in functions to explore the variance and co-variance of hydrologic data and use these to constrain a probabilistic model of the Lake.

Monitoring Algal Blooms with Landsat (OLI)
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating

Algal blooms are caused by an aggregation of either microscopic phytoplankton or macro algae. They can produce toxic or harmful effects on humans and or the ecosystem. The purpose of this activity is to teach students how to use remote sensing data from the Landsat 8 (OLI) to monitor algal blooms. Students work through a case study from Lake Erie. At the end of this activity students will be able to, in MATLAB, 1) access USGS data repositories to view Landsat imagery, 2) access band specific .TIF files directly from Amazon Web Services, 3) pre-process the imagery and a apply single band bloom detection algorithm and 4) work with the atmospherically corrected Land Surface Reflectance product to improve remote sensing estimates. Students will also work with the MATLAB Mapping Toolbox to produce presentation quality maps.
