Students design, build and test reflectors to measure the effect of solar reflectance on the efficiency of solar PV panels. They use a small PV panel, a multimeter, cardboard and foil to build and test their reflectors in preparation for a class competition. Then they graph and discuss their results with the class. Complete this activity as part of the Photovoltaic Efficiency unit and in conjunction with the Concentrated Solar Power lesson.

Students use the robot paths they documented during the associated Robots on Ice Engineering Challenge activity to learn about and then make artwork. During the previous activity, students recorded the path of their robots through a maze in order to collect data during a remote research simulation. Now, they take a new look at the robot paths, seeing them from an art perspective as continuous line drawings. Students learn about Picasso’s famous works of art that used the same technique. Then they learn the artistic definition of a line and see examples of how it is used in different art pieces; they practice making continuous line drawings and then create sculptures of their drawings using colorful wire. A PowerPoint® presentation is provided to guide the activity.

Students gain a deeper understanding of how sound sensors work through a hands-on design challenge involving LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT taskbots and sound sensors. Student groups each program a robot computer to use to the sound of hand claps to control the robot's movement. They learn programming skills and logic design in parallel. This Course Review and Approval Tool (CRAT) is the “workbook” that faculty use to design and plan their course with best practice in mind that addresses: curricular alignment with objectives, learning activities, practice assignments and quizzes, and higher-stakes assessments. The 10-tabbed spreadsheet is a digital multitool that centralizes and aggregates the entire course development, review, and approval processes. This tool is used to plan the course prior to its build in the Learning Management System (LMS) as part of an eight-module LMS-based support course that steps faculty through the process and gives them a learner-based perspective on how the tools work together and the features available to them for use in their own courses.

In addition to facilitating communication with multiple stakeholders who may share the document, the process MODELS a self- and peer-reviewed authentic assessment strategy that adapts itself well to any curriculum, whether for training, orientation, or credit-bearing coursework. It supports and models features of an intersection of agile design, backward design, and reflective practice in addition to encouraging authentic and formative assessment strategies. Providing all necessary documents in one easily accessed and bookmarkable document facilitates the process of course development by providing both a model and a touchstone for faculty who are often overwhelmed with the complexity of the process of developing or redeveloping courses regardless of delivery modality. While most of our faculty came to the program because of requirements for online or hybrid learning, most have exclaimed happily that they now apply this process to all of their courses and their learners have shown appreciation for the clarity and consistency that the tool promotes and supports.

Students learn how the process of soil solarization is used to pasteurize agricultural fields before planting crops. Soil solarization is a pest control technique in agriculture that uses the sun’s radiation to heat the soil and eliminate unwanted pests that could harm the crops. The approach is compared to other pest control methods such as fumigation and herbicide application, highlighting the respective benefits and drawbacks. In preparation for the associated hands-on activity on soil biosolarization, students learn how changing the variables involved in the solarizing process (such as the tarp material, soil water content and addition of organic matter) impacts the technique’s effectiveness. The design of concurrent distributed hardware systems is a major challenge for engineers today and is bound to escalate in the future, but engineering education continues to emphasize traditional tools of logic design that are just not up to the job. For engineers tackling realistic projects, improvised attempts at synchronization across multiple clock domains have long been a fact of life. Prone to hazards and metastability, these ad hoc interfaces could well be the least trustworthy aspects of a system, and typically also the least able to benefit from any readily familiar textbook techniques of analysis or verification.

Progress in the long run depends on a change of tactics. Instead of the customary but inevitably losing battle to describe complex systems in terms of their stepwise time evolution, taking their causal relationships and handshaking protocols as a starting point cuts to the chase by putting the emphasis where it belongs. This way of thinking may call for setting aside a hard earned legacy of practice and experience, but it leads ultimately to a more robust and scalable methodology.

Delay insensitive circuits rely on local coordination and control from the ground up. The most remarkable consequence of adhering to this course is that circuits can get useful things done without any clock distribution network whatsoever. Because a handshake acknowledgment concludes each interaction among primitive components and higher level subsystems alike, a clock pulse to mark them would be superfluous. This effect can bring a welcome relief to projects whose timing infrastructure would otherwise tend to create more problems than it solves.

The theory of delay insensitive circuits is not new but has not yet attracted much attention outside of its research community. At best ignored and at worst discouraged in standard curricula, this topic until now has been accessible only by navigating a sea of conference papers and journal articles, some of them paywalled. Popular misconceptions and differing conventions about terminology and notation have posed further barriers to entry. To address this need, this book presents a unified account of delay insensitive circuits from first principles to cutting edge concepts, subject only to an undergraduate-level understanding of discrete math. In an approachable tutorial format with numerous illustrations, exercises, and over three hundred references, it guides an engineering professional or advanced student towards proficiency in this extensive field.
