This is a field trip designed to connect labs on rocks and minerals with the bedrock geology of a group research site. Students locate themselves on topographic maps using GPS and the topography they observe, examine igneous and sedimentary rocks, and sketch igneous and sedimentary rock textures. The field trip gives the students an opportunity to review some common minerals before being confronted with a large number of rocks in boxes.

Most of this lab is a fairly traditional rocks-in-boxes lab on identification of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. At the end of the lab, students practice identifying real rocks in the campus rock garden, which includes boulders of most of the bedrock units within our county. Students use GPS units to find the samples to identify (so that they can explore while the instructor answers other student questions). At each boulder, students identify the rock type, the minerals present, and the rock textures. The lab handout includes a simplified geologic map of an area that they previously visited on a field trip, and which they will use later in the semester in discussions of water samples that they collect.

We will read Flowers are Calling by Rita Gray and Kenard Pak and create our own flower bookmarks. Participate in a Movement/Music/Finger Play activity by acting like our favorite pollinators. This lesson is aimed at connecting young learners to their natural world and promote school readiness skills. Before we go into the field, students are exposed to field collection techniques and appropriate information to collect at the outcrop. This assignment is good for field trips because students each collect 1 or few samples, but spend time on the outcrop measuring a section and collecting associated lithologic and other fossil data if available (locality information, exposure, over and underlying sedimentology, details of host rock, sedimentary structures, assocaited fossils, diversity and abundance, taphonomic condition of fossils, etc). The field locality can be anywhere where there are resaonably well preserved fossils (and should give students an appreciation of museum quality specimens). This allows this exercise to be flexible as field trip localities change. All of the information that they collect in the field will be included in their field notebook that is handed in at the end of the field trip for evaluation. In the lab-I used class time-students are asked to make a detailed sketch of their sample that they can take to the library with them, and a discussion is held as to where to look for information to identify specimens with. Students are given a week (variable depending on the availability of resources, for example if monographs need to be aquired through inter-library loan) to idenitfy their specimen and then asked to catalog them for the museum. They fill out a SUNY Oswego Paleontology Museum card, which they have seen all semester for their sample and are given the option to donate it to the collection or keep it.

The Fremont Culture: Stop 3 Museum of the West Virtual Tour. Watch this short video to learn about a Museum of the West exhibit or collection to preview your field trip or for a virtual field trip if you are unable to attend in person. The Museum of the West is part of the Museums of Westen Colorado. The Fremont lived in Colorado Plateau from 500-1300 CE. They left behind artifacts and rock art, but not much is known about what happened to them. David Bailey explains what we do know about the Fremont culture.

Students explore geomagnetism with compasses, navigation exercises, and a geo-caching activity and explore aurora and space weather, with an optional field trip to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The GigaPan Virtual Field Trip is used as a pre and post assessment of student understanding of basic physical geology concepts and processes. Students are directed to a GigaPan image of Peyto Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada and asked to list observations and provide interpretations based on their observations.

The students have been lectured to about glacial processes, but the homework was given prior to a lecture about glacial landforms. A field trip surveying the glacial landforms of SE South Dakota was just completed. The students must draw upon their knowledge and utlize other sources to interpret the landforms they see in the imagery.
