Students investigate the property dependence between concentrations and boiling point. In section 1, students first investigate the boiling point of various liquid solutions. In section 2, they analyze data collected by the entire class to generate two boiling point curves, one for salt solutions and one for sugar solutions. Finally, in section 3, students use the data they have analyzed to determine how to create a solution that has a particular boiling point and is a cost-effective design.

Concentrating on Copper: An Exploration of Mineral Commodities

Introduction: Understanding market price fluctuations is difficult for the average consumer as they are not often cognizant of what raw materials are used for various products. The goal of this lesson is to illustrate as many of the economic principles related to mineral commodities as possible and, as the lesson is ideally taught in the context of an earth or environmental science course, to couple these principles with the realities of mineral mining and subsequent processes required to produce a raw material from an ore. The lesson uses copper as an analog for such commodities. While the scope of this lesson is, then, quite unusual for high school students, these concepts are quite necessary to produce a populace who can make educated, socially-responsible, and economically-prudent decisions in both their political and personal lives.

Background: This lesson is ideal for any situation where the goal is to teach earth or environmental science students about the realities of mineral commodities, how they are extracted, and how supply and demand for them work to create that market, produce goods, and affect the environment. In the real world, most of the supply-chain for such products is hidden from the end-use consumer. This is certainly not intentional on the part of governments and corporations, necessarily, but is pretty typical due to the remote nature of most mining operations and the lack of contact that consumers have with various mid-level parts of this supply chain. Typically, the only exposure to mineral commodity prices will occur when this consumer wishes to purchase a product that contains those minerals and whose price is observed to not be consistent over time. Petroleum is a common example of this in our everyday lives, but it is no different than any other. Thus, this lesson focuses on the life cycle of copper, which is a mineral commodity that most of us think little about in our day to day lives yet is just as prevalent and important as other commodities like petroleum.

Students design, build and test reflectors to measure the effect of solar reflectance on the efficiency of solar PV panels. They use a small PV panel, a multimeter, cardboard and foil to build and test their reflectors in preparation for a class competition. Then they graph and discuss their results with the class. Complete this activity as part of the Photovoltaic Efficiency unit and in conjunction with the Concentrated Solar Power lesson.

This 90-minute activity features six interactive molecular models to explore the relationships among voltage, current, and resistance. Students start at the atomic level to explore how voltage and resistance affect the flow of electrons. Next, they use a model to investigate how temperature can affect conductivity and resistivity. Finally, they explore how electricity can be converted to other forms of energy. The activity was developed for introductory physics courses, but the first half could be appropriate for physical science and Physics First. The formula for Ohm's Law is introduced, but calculations are not required. This item is part of the Concord Consortium, a nonprofit research and development organization dedicated to transforming education through technology. In this interactive activity, learners build computer models of atoms by adding or removing electrons, protons, and neutrons. It presents the orbital model of an atom: a nucleus consisting of protons and neutrons with electrons surrounding it in regions of high probability called orbitals. Guided tasks are provided, such as constructing a lithium atom and a carbon-12 atom in the fewest possible steps. The activity concludes with a model for building a charged hydrogen atom (an ion). Within each task, students take snapshots of their work product and answer probative questions. With the help of simple, teacher-led demonstration activities, students learn the basic concepts of heat transfer by means of conduction, convection, and radiation. Students then apply these concepts as they work in teams to solve two problems. One problem requires that they maintain the warm temperature of one soda can filled with water at approximately body temperature, and the other problem is to cause an identical soda can of warm water to cool as much as possible during the same thirty-minute time interval. Students design their solutions using only common, everyday materials. They record the water temperatures in their two soda cans every five minutes, and prepare line graphs in order to visually compare their results to the temperature of an unaltered control can of water.

Conduction: Heat Conduction Through Materials

The heat conductivity of a solid material defines how fast heat will flow through it. You can probably think of several everyday examples of materials with high (fast) conductivity or low (slow) conductivity. This model illustrates the effect of different conductivities by placing different materials between a hot and a cold object and graphing the changing temperatures.

Conduction: The Effect of Temperature Difference

The rate of heat flow between two objects is proportional to their difference in temperature. One experiences this every day, with stoves, outdoor weather and touching things. If you touch something that's the same temperature as your hand, there's no heat flow at all. This model allows you to adjust the temperature difference between two objects and observe the graph of heat flow.

Conduction: The Effect of Wall Thickness on Heat Conduction

This Western Mining History database uses Mineral Resources Data System to list known Colorado historical mines by county. Each county site has links to the known mines within its borders. Some are known and named, others are unnamed. Mines should be assumed to be on private property unless other research is conducted. Data provided for each mine site include: Name, State, County, Elevation, Primary Mineral Mined, Latitude and Longitude and a link to Google Maps. Photos are provided where available. Additional information for some Mines are satellite photos, and ownership, business and historical records. Mining History is an historical site that provides information on mining, mining towns, the gold and silver rush, and Photos and maps of the western United States. This activity represents a culmination project for this unit by means of which students can assess whether the IPCC prediction of increased storminess as an outcome of global warming survives testing. For the previous three weeks students will have conducted several inquiry-based group activities designed to introduce and reinforce fundamental meteorology/climatology concepts. In this 2-day project, students access online AVHRR SST imagery, as well as tabulated numeric data regarding historical North American tropical cyclones, import data into Excel for interpretation and analysis, and submit two group reports.
