Polarity and Attractive Strength

Explore the role of polarity in the strength of intermolecular attractions. While all molecules are attracted to each other, some attractions are stronger than others. Non-polar molecules are attracted through a London dispersion attraction; polar molecules are attracted through both the London dispersion force and the stronger dipole-dipole attraction. The force of attractions between molecules has consequences for their interactions in physical, chemical and biological applications.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate polygons. The applet shows a polygon which is initially an irregular convex pentagon. The user can drag any vertex and a message shows if it becomes concave. The user can also alter the number of sides from 3 to 99, the title changing to reflect it's name up to 12 sides. You can also make it regular, dragging a vertex then changes all vertices to maintain it as regular. The web page has many definitions and links to the various forms and orders of polygon. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

Population Explosion

Population Explosion is a computer simulation which allows students to manipulate factors to see what happens over time to a population of sheep within an enclosed field. As the simulation runs, a graph shows the dynamic relationship between the sheep population size and their primary food resource, grass. Students can control factors such as initial number of sheep, grass regrowth rate, gain from food, and birthrate. Predation is represented by a “reaper” button which may also be controlled. The speed of the simulation can be set so that students can see more clearly what happens over time, or collect data more quickly, depending on how fast the simulation runs. Directions and a suggested simulation sequence are provided along with prompts so that students can pause and consider their results. A space within the simulation is provided for students to record observations and answers to the prompts. For each step in this suggested sequence, students take a snapshot of graphs they have created and store them in an album. At the end of the activity analysis questions help students connect the activity to wild populations. An optional extension exercise is also suggested.

In spring 2020, the world was hit by a pandemic that spread globally by March, causing universities and most of the world to move to remote means. Summer field camps, long hailed as a rite of passage in the geosciences, were cancelled throughout the US. The community moved quickly, with NAGT developing remote learning tools and arranging for sharing and collaboration between instructors and institutions. As such, UNAVCO (GETSI) and University of Northern Colorado embarked on a data collection campaign for a summer field course entitled "Geoscience Field Issues Using High-Resolution Topography to Understand Earth Surface Processes" -- originally slated for in-person teaching. The team collected GNSS data, drone imagery for use in structure from motion, and terrestrial laser scanning from a site near Greeley, Colorado on the Poudre River. This assignment uses static GNSS methods to establish a base station used to establish a control point for a kinematic survey (establishing ground control points used in Sheep Draw Structure from motion activity).

Imagine that you asked your students to interpret a seismic section using sequence stratigraphic principals and concepts. The ultimate scientific goal, of course, is to interpret the stratigraphic architecture and to develop an internally consistent interpretation of how this stratal geometry was formed. Now imagine that your seismic line has extremely high resolution. Finally, imagine that you know the 'right answer' to the interpretation, that you know the genesis of this stratigraphy precisely. XES Basin data can fulfill this scenario and can play a critical role in connecting earth surface processes to the formation of sedimentary basin architecture. The following project is designed to forge a strong link between geomorphic processes, tectonics, sedimentation, and stratigraphic architecture. Students interpret the synthetic stratigraphy in the image above and present their interpretation as a GSA-style poster.

Protein Folding

Explore how hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions cause proteins to fold into specific shapes. Proteins, made up of amino acids, are used for many different purposes in the cell. The cell is an aqueous (water-filled) environment. Some amino acids have polar (hydrophilic) side chains while others have non-polar (hydrophobic) side chains. The hydrophilic amino acids interact more strongly with water (which is polar) than do the hydrophobic amino acids. The interactions of the amino acids within the aqueous environment result in a specific protein shape.
